Rumor claims Galaxy S26 Ultra and S27 Ultra may reuse the same periscope camera

Based on recent leaks from @UniverseIce, it looks like Samsung isn’t planning a major overhaul for the periscope camera on their upcoming Galaxy S26 Ultra and S27 Ultra. We’re talking about the same 50MP periscope module that’s already in the Galaxy S24 Ultra and Galaxy S25 Ultra, same 1/2.52-inch sensor, 0.7μm pixel size, 5x optical zoom. From a specs standpoint, this hardware still holds its own against rivals, especially regarding zoom capability; it’s one of the sharpest shooters in that zoom range, outclassing models like the iPhone 17 Pro series.

No periscope camera upgrade for Galaxy S26 Ultra and S27 Ultra?

That said, reusing the same camera hardware for four generations straight is unusual for Samsung’s flagship lineup. Traditionally, customers expect at least incremental enhancements year-over-year, especially in areas like camera performance. Sticking with the same sensor and optics could be construed as stagnation in the eyes of enthusiasts and general consumers who tie their upgrade decisions to hardware advancements.

Still, it’s early days. Samsung could potentially offset any disappointment through aggressive improvements in image processing, computational photography, or other AI-driven enhancements. There’s also the economics—reusing proven camera hardware could allow Samsung to cut R&D costs and focus investment elsewhere in the device. Essentially, they might be betting that their present hardware remains competitive enough, given how far ahead it was when first introduced.

At this stage, nothing’s official. But if this rumor pans out, Samsung’s strategy appears to prioritize refinement and software intelligence over new camera modules for the time being. The real test will be whether consumers feel the same way when it’s time to upgrade.
