Samsung’s latest foldable lineup, the Galaxy Z Fold 7, Galaxy Z Flip 7, and Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE, has been available for preorder in South Korea for two weeks, and early sales figures reveal a significant shift in consumer preferences. Historically, Samsung’s clamshell-style Galaxy Z Flip series dominated preorder and sales charts due to its lower price and compact design. However, this trend appears to have reversed in 2025.
According to Korean outlet FNN News, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 accounts for approximately 60% of all preorders in South Korea, while the Galaxy Z Flip7 series, including both the standard and FE models, make up the remaining 40%. This is a surprising development, considering the Galaxy Z Fold series has traditionally been the more niche and expensive choice.
In previous years, the Galaxy Z Flip series consistently led preorder numbers. The Galaxy Z Flip 6, for instance, accounted for 60% of preorders in 2024, while the Galaxy Z Fold 6 only held a 40% share. The disparity was even greater in 2023, when the Galaxy Z Flip 5 dominated with 70% of preorders, and the Galaxy Z Fold 5 trailed at 30%. This year’s reversal hints at evolving consumer expectations and a maturing foldable market.
Why the Galaxy Z Fold7 is becoming a market favorite?
The sudden popularity of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 can be largely attributed to meaningful hardware and design upgrades. Samsung has significantly refined the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s physical dimensions, introducing a thinner and lighter form factor, currently the lightest foldable phone on the market. In addition, it features a larger cover display and enhanced camera hardware, two aspects that consumers have long demanded improvements on.
These refinements appear to have struck a chord with a broader segment of users who may have previously considered the Galaxy Z Fold series too bulky or expensive. The new design balances productivity features with improved portability, making it more appealing for both professional and casual users alike.
Can the Galaxy Z Fold7 Break Sales Records?
The Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7’s combined preorder performance has already outpaced last year’s Galaxy Z Fold 6 / Flip 6. Samsung is now eyeing the all-time preorder record set by the Galaxy Z Fold 5 / Flip 5 in 2023, which sold 1.02 million units during its preorder window. In comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 / Z Flip 6 series fell short at 910,000 units. If the current momentum continues, Samsung may not only reclaim its own record but also further solidify its lead in the global foldable market.
As competition from Chinese foldable brands intensifies, Samsung’s ability to innovate and shift consumer demand toward its more premium offerings could prove pivotal in maintaining its dominance. The unexpected preorder success of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 may mark a turning point in the company’s foldable strategy and consumer perception at large.
