OneUI 7 Beta added switch between 120hz and 60hz on games

The latest One UI 7 beta update for the Galaxy S24, S24+, and S24 Ultra from Samsung has introduced a new feature known as Gaming Motion Smoothness through the Gaming Hub/Game Booster app. It will let users choose between smoother gameplay at 120Hz refresh rate or extended battery life by switching to 60Hz refresh rate during gaming.

A New Approach to Gaming Performance

While Samsung used to allow users to lock the refresh rate down to 48Hz for better power efficiency on devices running One UI 6 or earlier, this is no longer an option in One UI 7. In its place, users have the ability to toggle between 60Hz and 120Hz for a balance between performance and battery life. Although Samsung has not completely discarded the 48Hz frame rate limit, there is still a chance that it may return with future beta updates or in the stable release of One UI 7.

Game Setting Compatibility

This new feature is respectful of individual game capabilities. The refresh rate settings for games that have their own settings are not overridden by the app. Even games capped at a 60Hz refresh rate will be left as is.

How to Access the Smoothness of Gaming Motion

If you are on the One UI 7 beta, here is how you access and enable the Gaming Motion Smoothness feature:

  1. Open the Gaming Hub application.
  2. Tap the More button at the top-right.
  3. Go to Game Booster settings and select refresh rate options.

Enhanced Game-Specific Customization

One UI 7 Game Booster, too, allows granular performance setting control for every single game. These are the settings that can be changed:

  • Maximum Frame Rate
  • Resolution

Optimization Level

You can find them through the menu Customizations for individual games inside the Game Booster application; it will give you the opportunity to personalize the settings for each title.

In fact, Gaming Motion Smoothness in One UI 7 will go a long way in showing Samsung’s commitment to giving more granular controls to gamers for performance and battery optimization. And while it may be a bummer for some that the 48Hz frame rate option was not included, the ability to toggle between 60Hz and 120Hz is very welcome. While already quite impressive, Samsung is likely to further refine it in the coming beta program and by incorporating the feedback of users. Indeed, do stay tuned for more updates, as One UI 7 evolves.
