During a recent press briefing in Seoul, Samsung discussed its long-term strategy for the Galaxy Watch lineup. They are prioritizing premium health features and performance over battery life. The company also announced that it is designing future versions, such as the Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch 10. They aim to provide features that their Chinese rivals cannot compete with.
Samsung Executive Director Jong Min Choi highlighted the fundamental difference in the way the company operates and that of its rivals. While most Chinese brands emphasize long battery life through the use of low-power microcontroller units (MCUs), Samsung is set to deliver superior performance and enhanced health monitoring with its powerful BioActive sensors.
The Five-year plan for health features
One of the best examples of Samsung’s long-term dedication is the Galaxy Watch 8’s new Antioxidant Index feature. Choi verified that the feature allows users to measure their body’s beta carotene levels to view antioxidant levels. This new health metric is the result of five years of study by Samsung. This indicates Samsung’s emphasis on achieving actual innovations rather than simple, short-term gains.
The Antioxidant Index operates by the user placing their thumb on the sensor of the watch, and it measures carotenoid levels in the skin using light. This non-surgical technique gives an indication of lifestyle habits, including diet, and can assist users in making smarter health decisions. Some of the other main features on the Galaxy Watch 8 are enhanced sleep coaching, “Vascular Load” to track stress on the vascular system, and “Running Coach,” which creates personalized training programs.
Looking forward to Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch 10
This long-term research and development plan goes well beyond today’s products. Choi said that the development team is already working with the product planning team to find new technologies that can be sold in future models.
“We are referring to the aspects of the technology that are closer to being sold and intend to incorporate them in future devices such as the Galaxy Watch 9 and Galaxy Watch 10,” Choi said. As the Galaxy Watch 8 series just came out, we can expect a possible Galaxy Watch 9 to be unveiled in about a year’s time.
Such long-term planning is indicative of Samsung’s dedication to developing useful, data-backed health and fitness features beyond basic activity tracking that differentiate its wearables from others. Wrapping up, Samsung confirmed that it will keep building the Galaxy Watch “with pride,” prioritizing the development of new features that will actually make a difference to users.
